Leader Lesson
We all have our own cozy little comfort zones. We like to operate from places we know that put us at ease, especially when change is looming. Maybe we like to be the first person in a meeting to raise our hand and say something or maybe we often say “no” to new ideas because they would change our well-established work processes.
Regardless of what your comfort zone encompasses, ask yourself: by staying in your comfort zone are you avoiding risks that would help propel your leadership growth to new levels?
I would wager that your answer is “yes,” even if you might not realize it yet. And so, what I want you to do right now is think about two (2) things that you can do this month to step outside of your comfort zone.
For example:
- I would like to be more productive and effective, but I can’t do that until I stop checking my phone every 10 minutes. It’s a comfortable action, and a bad habit. I am making a promise to myself today to put my phone away in a drawer where I can’t easily reach it while I do my work.
- I would like to share my ideas for a new product, but in order to do so I need to speak up during the next staff meeting. I am making a promise to myself today that I will raise my hand first when it comes time for group discussion so that my ideas are heard.
Now it’s your turn to make your two-item comfort zone-busting list. As you see from my examples above, your items don’t need to be complicated. And really, getting yourself out of your comfort zone is often done through small, consistent, daily practices. So start basic. Or go bold, if that’s your style. Do you.
Take two risks today–by doing so you will be taking two steps toward your next level of greatness.
